Respite Care — Support for the People Who Give Everything

Caring for a loved one is one of the most selfless things a person can do. But it is also one of the most demanding — physically, emotionally and practically. Many family carers provide dozens of hours of unpaid care each week, often without a break, often without asking for help and often at significant cost to their own health and wellbeing.

Respite care exists to change that. It is a planned or emergency arrangement whereby a professional carer steps in to care for your loved one — in their own home, to their existing routine and standard — while you take the time you need to rest, attend to your own health, see friends and family, take a holiday or simply breathe. It is not a luxury. It is an essential part of sustainable caring.

At Oice Support Services, we provide respite care across Dagenham, Barking and the wider East London area. Whether you need a few hours off each week, a full week's cover while you take a holiday, or urgent short-term care following an unexpected situation, we can arrange professional, seamless support at short notice. Your loved one's care continues exactly as normal — and you come back restored.

Types of Respite Care We Provide

We offer two primary types of respite care — planned and emergency — and we can combine both into a flexible ongoing arrangement.

Planned Respite Care

Scheduled in advance — for a specific period of hours, days or weeks — planned respite gives you the certainty to make arrangements, book holidays or simply know that regular time to yourself is guaranteed.

  • Regular weekly or fortnightly respite visits
  • Cover during holidays — from a few days to several weeks
  • Weekend or overnight respite on a scheduled basis
  • Planned cover for appointments, work commitments or social events
  • Full handover and briefing from you before each arrangement begins

Ideal for: When you can arrange in advance and want the reassurance of a scheduled break built into your caring routine.

Emergency Respite Care

Arranged at short notice when an unexpected situation arises — illness, a family emergency, sudden carer exhaustion or any circumstance that means you cannot be present as planned.

  • Short-notice or same-day care arrangements where possible
  • Temporary cover following carer illness or hospitalisation
  • Urgent support during a family crisis or bereavement
  • Flexible duration — from a few hours to several weeks
  • Rapid assessment and care plan creation for immediate start

Ideal for:When something unexpected happens and you need professional care arranged quickly, with minimal disruption to your loved one's routine.

Flexible Ongoing Respite

Many families find that regular, built-in respite — combined with the ability to call on emergency cover when needed — provides the most sustainable caring arrangement. We can design a respite package that includes both planned and flexible elements, reviewed and adjusted as your circumstances change.

What Our Respite Carers Provide

During every respite arrangement, our carers deliver the same high standard of care your loved one is used to — following their routine, their preferences and their care plan.

  • Personal Care and Hygiene

Washing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene and continence support — all delivered with the same dignity and sensitivity your loved one expects.

  • Medication Support

Medication prompting or administration at the correct times, recorded digitally and in line with the existing care plan and GP instructions.

  • Meal Preparation and Nutrition

Preparing meals and snacks according to dietary needs and personal preferences — maintaining the eating routines that matter to your loved one.

  • Companionship and Social Engagement

Warm, genuine company throughout each visit — conversation, shared activities and the kind of engaged presence that maintains emotional wellbeing.

  • Household Support

Light cleaning, laundry, washing up and maintaining a comfortable, safe home environment as part of each respite visit.

  • Mobility and Transfer Assistance

Safe support with moving around the home, getting in and out of bed or chairs — using correct manual handling throughout.

  • Monitoring Health and Wellbeing

Observing the service user's physical and emotional condition during the respite period and alerting family or care coordinators to any changes.

  • Overnight Respite Support

Where needed, overnight or sleeping night cover during the respite period — so family carers can sleep properly and recover fully.

  • Community Outings and Appointments

Accompanying the service user to appointments, social events or simply out for a walk — maintaining their connection to the community during the respite period.

  • Family Updates and Communication

Regular updates to the family carer during the respite period — so you can genuinely relax, knowing you will be informed if anything important arises.

Every respite arrangement begins with a full handover from the family carer. We follow the existing routine exactly — so your loved one barely notices the transition. Call 02045528642 to discuss your needs.

Who Is Respite Care Right For?

Family Carers Who Are Exhausted or Unwell

If you are a family carer who is running on empty — physically exhausted, emotionally drained or struggling with your own health — respite care is for you. Taking a break is not giving up. It is the single most important thing you can do to sustain your caring role long-term and protect your own wellbeing.

Carers Who Need Time for Other Commitments

Life does not pause because you are a carer. Whether you have a work commitment, a medical appointment of your own, a family event or simply need time to manage everyday life, respite care covers those gaps professionally and without disruption to your loved one's routine.

People Whose Primary Carer Is Temporarily Unavailable

Sometimes the need for respite is not a matter of burnout — it is practical. A primary carer may be hospitalised, travelling, dealing with a bereavement or simply need to be somewhere else. Emergency respite care fills that gap quickly and competently, ensuring continuity of care regardless of the circumstances.

How Respite Care Is Arranged

1

Contact Us and Describe Your Situation

Call us or complete our online form. Tell us what you need — planned cover for a specific period, emergency short-notice support, or an ongoing flexible arrangement. We respond quickly and without judgement. Our care coordinators are experienced in arranging respite at all levels of urgency.

2

Handover and Care Plan

Before the respite arrangement begins, we take a detailed handover from you — your loved one's routine, preferences, medical needs, medication, likes and dislikes. We create or adapt a care plan based on this information and brief the assigned carer fully before their first visit.

3

Respite Begins — You Rest

Your respite carer arrives at the agreed time and takes over. You receive regular updates if you want them — or you can simply switch off and rest, knowing everything is in hand. When your respite period ends, we hand back with a full update on how things went.

"A family carer who is burned out cannot provide good care. Our respite service exists to prevent that — and to give families the permission they sometimes need to take a break."
