What Is Overnight Care and Why Does It Matter?

The night-time hours can be among the most challenging — and most vulnerable — for people living at home with care needs. Disturbance, confusion, falls, continence needs and anxiety do not stop because it is dark. For families who cannot be present through the night, the absence of support during these hours can be a significant source of worry.

Overnight care places a trained, professional carer in the home from the evening through to the morning — covering the full night-time period and providing immediate, calm assistance whenever it is needed. Whether that means helping with a bedtime routine and then remaining on standby, or actively checking on and assisting the service user multiple times through the night, we design the arrangement around what the individual actually needs.

At Oice Support Services, we offer two types of overnight care — sleeping night and waking night — and we will advise honestly on which is most appropriate during your free assessment. Both options are delivered by carers who are trained, DBS-checked and experienced in night-time care, including dementia support, continence management and emergency response.

Sleeping Night vs Waking Night Care

🌙 Sleeping Night Care

The carer is present in the home overnight and sleeps in a designated room. They remain available and will wake to assist if needed — but are not expected to be continuously active. Best for people who are generally settled but whose family needs reassurance that someone is present.

👁️ Waking Night Care

The carer remains awake and active throughout the night — carrying out regular checks, providing continence support, repositioning, managing distress or confusion and responding to any need as it arises. Best for people with dementia, high falls risk, frequent nocturnal needs or complex conditions.

What Our Overnight Care Includes

Whether sleeping or waking, our overnight carers provide essential support through the night. Here is what the service typically covers:

Bedtime Routine SupportHelping with undressing, washing, oral hygiene, changing into nightwear and settling comfortably into bed — ensuring the evening routine is completed with dignity and ease.

Medication at Bedtime and During the NightAdministering or prompting prescribed evening and night-time medications, ensuring nothing is missed and any adverse reactions are noted and reported.

Continence Care Through the NightAssisting with toileting during the night — calmly and without fuss — and managing continence products to ensure comfort, dignity and skin integrity.

Repositioning and Pressure Area CareRegular repositioning for those with limited mobility — preventing pressure sores and ensuring the person remains comfortable throughout the night.

Reassurance for Anxiety and ConfusionProviding calm, patient reassurance for those who wake disoriented, anxious or distressed — particularly important for people living with dementia or experiencing post-operative confusion.

Falls Prevention and Emergency ResponseMonitoring and responding quickly to any movement indicating risk — and providing immediate, trained first-response support in the event of a fall or other emergency.

Morning Routine Hand-OverSupporting the transition from night to morning — helping the person wake comfortably, begin their morning routine or handing over to a day carer arriving at the start of the day.

Regular Night Checks (Waking Night)For waking night care, regular scheduled checks throughout the night — observing breathing, position, skin condition and general wellbeing, and documenting each check.

Night-time HydrationEnsuring the service user drinks adequately through the night — particularly important for those on diuretics, with UTI history or at risk of dehydration.

Comprehensive Night LogA written record of the overnight period — documenting checks, any incidents, medications given, continence events and the service user's general condition — handed to the family or day carer each morning.

The specific tasks carried out depend on whether sleeping night or waking night care has been agreed. During your free assessment, we will recommend the most appropriate option based on your loved one's needs. Call 02045528642 to discuss.

Sleeping Night Care or Waking Night Care — Which Is Right?

The right overnight care option depends on how often your loved one needs active assistance through the night and the level of reassurance your family requires. Here is a clear breakdown:

🌙 Sleeping Night Care

The carer is present in the home from an agreed evening time — typically 10pm — through to the morning, usually 7am. They sleep in a designated room and are available to assist immediately if the service user wakes and needs help. They are not expected to be continuously active.

What's included:

  • Bedtime routine support before settling
  • Medication at bedtime
  • Available to assist if woken during the night
  • Morning hand-over and wake-up support
  • Night log completed each morning

Ideal for: People who are generally settled overnight but occasionally wake needing help — and families who need someone present for reassurance and safety.

👁️ Waking Night Care

The carer remains awake and actively working throughout the entire night shift. They carry out regular scheduled checks, provide continence care, reposition the service user, manage distress and respond to any need as it arises — maintaining a full log throughout.

What's included:

  • Full bedtime routine support
  • Regular checks throughout the night (every 1–2 hours or as agreed)
  • Continence care and repositioning
  • Medication administration as prescribed
  • Management of distress, confusion or anxiety
  • Falls response and emergency support
  • Comprehensive night log

Ideal for: People with dementia, frequent nocturnal needs, high falls risk, continence issues, complex conditions or those recently discharged from hospital.

Who Is Overnight Care Right For?

People With Dementia or Nocturnal Confusion

People living with dementia often experience increased confusion, restlessness or distress during the night — a phenomenon sometimes known as sundowning. An overnight carer provides calm, expert management of these episodes, preventing risk and ensuring the person is safe, settled and cared for throughout.

People at High Risk of Falls

For individuals with limited mobility, balance difficulties or a recent falls history, the night-time hours carry significant risk. An overnight carer reduces this risk substantially — monitoring movement, assisting with safe transfers to the bathroom and responding immediately if a fall occurs.

Family Carers Who Need Rest

Many of the people who most need overnight care support are family members who are exhausted from providing round-the-clock care themselves. Overnight care gives family carers the opportunity to sleep properly and recover — knowing their loved one is in safe, professional hands throughout the night.

Getting Started With Overnight Care

1

Free Home Assessment

We begin with a thorough, free assessment at home. Our care coordinator visits at a time that suits your family to understand the service user's night-time needs — how often they wake, what they typically need assistance with, any falls history, continence requirements, medication and any conditions that affect sleep or nocturnal behaviour.

2

Sleeping Night or Waking Night Recommendation

Based on the assessment, we provide an honest recommendation — sleeping night or waking night care — and explain exactly what that would involve. We consider clinical need, family preference and budget, and we discuss any combination or transitional arrangement if the situation is changing.

3

Care Begins — Reviewed Regularly

Overnight care begins on the agreed schedule. We assign consistent carers wherever possible so your loved one becomes familiar with the person supporting them through the night. Your care coordinator checks in regularly and adjusts the arrangement as needs evolve.

“Overnight care is not just about safety — it is about giving families permission to rest. That peace of mind is as important as anything else we provide.”
